Volunteer Spotlight: Waymark Xtreme Journey Camp

Atlanta, GA – March 27, 2026 - Heartbeats & Hands 540 (HH540) volunteers proudly served at Waymark’s Xtreme Journey Camp, a transformative weekend experience for youth in foster care and foster families.

Waymark’s program is designed to prepare teens and young adults for adulthood by building critical life skills. Camp sessions included:

✔️ Financial Literacy

✔️ Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

✔️ Emotional Awareness

In addition to the life skills sessions, the camp hosted a Career Fair, connecting students with vocational information and real-world opportunities to help them explore pathways for their future.

The weekend also included Trauma-Informed Training for foster parents, equipping caring adults with the tools to better understand and support youth who have experienced adversity. This training is valuable for anyone working with children and teens, reinforcing the importance of empathy, awareness, and intentional care.

Throughout the day, HH540 volunteers played an active role in supporting the experience — assisting with stuffing swag bags, engaging with youth, and helping with lunch setup and distribution to ensure a smooth and welcoming environment for all participants.

As part of this experience, HH540 was honored to distribute 70 copies of the Cole’s Initiative financial literacy guide, "I graduated now what" by Deborah Benard. The book aims to equip youth with tools they can carry beyond the weekend and into their futures.

This volunteer opportunity was a powerful reminder of how access to knowledge, mentorship, and supportive environments can truly shape lives.
